Case Study: Whispering Vine

Whispering Vine is a three unit restaurant, wine bar, & wine retail group in Reno, Nevada.  With our help, they created their own Whispering Vines branded private label Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Rosé, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The proceeds from these wines are donated to local charities in and around Reno.

We helped by sourcing high quality grapes from estate vineyards in the Willamette Valley. Our team farms for quality using best practices learned over decades growing grapes in Oregon. Our wine-making team took input from the owners to craft a style of wine within their parameters. Finally, our graphic designer took elements of their logo and developed a custom wine label that reinforces their brand.

By minimizing many of the usual sales and marketing expenses associated with the three-tier system, our clients successfully produced a high quality and high gross margin product. The wines were an instant hit with their customers. The first run sold out quickly and they immediately signed up to a make a second vintage, this time increasing their production to meet the demand. The owners are pleased to have successfully created a vehicle to give back to the community that supports their businesses. The program is now generating thousands of dollars annually for local charities.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Getting Started

What is private label or custom winemaking?
Private label winemaking allows businesses to create their own exclusive wine brand. We handle everything from sourcing premium grapes to winemaking, bottling, and label design, so you can offer a custom wine that reflects your brand identity.

Who are your ideal clients?
We work with restaurants, wine retailers, importers, distributors, hotels, country clubs, corporate brands, and event venues looking to develop their own wine labels. Our best clients already have established sales channels and want high-quality wines without the massive case commitments of larger wineries.

How do I get started?
The first step is to fill out our short questionnaire to help us understand your business, goals, and wine preferences. After reviewing your responses, we’ll schedule a consultation to discuss the best approach for your project.

Wine & Production

What types of wines do you produce?
We specialize in premium Pacific Northwest wines. These wine varieties include:

  • Best Sellers: Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley Chardonnay, Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

  • Additional Offerings: Willamette Valley Gamay Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Rosé, Pinot Gris, Red Blends, White Blends

What is the minimum order size?
We offer flexible production sizes to accommodate small and mid-sized businesses. Minimum case commitments vary depending on the wine and packaging options, but most projects start with an initial run of at least 500 cases. We strive to make private label winemaking accessible to businesses of all sizes.

How long does it take to produce my wine?
Production timelines vary based on the type of wine. Bottled wines ready for labeling can be available in a few months, while custom barrel-aged wines may take a year or more. We’ll provide a clear timeline based on your project.

Customization & Branding

Can I design my own label?
Yes! You can provide your own design, or we can connect you with a designer to create a label that aligns with your brand vision and compliance regulations.

Can you help with compliance and licensing?
Yes, we handle the filing of the Federal COLA (Certificate of Label Approval) with the TTB. This is required for every wine produced in the U.S. Your business is responsible for securing your own licenses to buy and sell wine. You are also responsible for any necessary state or local product registration where you choose to sell the wine.

If you are just starting your business and do not have a license to buy and sell wine, you should start there.

Sales & Distribution

Can you help me sell my wine?
We focus on production, but we can offer insights on pricing, distribution strategies, and regulatory considerations to help you integrate your wine into your existing sales channels.

Do I need a wine license to sell my wine?
Yes, we are operating a business to business (B2B) winemaking offering, and we require that our clients hold valid wine licenses. Examples of the types of licenses our clients hold include wholesaler, importer, on-premise, off-premise, winery, and brewery licenses. However, there are some exceptions depending on your business type and location. We can help you understand the requirements. We are not attorneys or compliance experts, so for complex questions we may refer you to compliance consultants.

Pricing & Payment

How much does custom winemaking cost?
Pricing depends on the type of wine, order size, and customization options. We provide transparent pricing and will work with you to create a high-quality wine that fits your budget.

What are the payment terms?
We require a deposit to begin the custom branding and wine production process, with the balance due upon completion of the project. Payment terms are discussed during the consultation process, depending on the size of the project and the amount of wine that you’re planning to produce.

Can I try samples?
Yes, for qualified customers, we will ship samples to you. We start with a free consultation to understand the scope of your project. Once we have a clear understanding of your goals and provide a written quote, we will send samples for your review.

Can I visit your winery?
Yes! We are located in Dundee, OR, and we love hosting prospective clients at our winery. We can introduce you to our team, show you our state-of-the-art facility, walk the vineyards, and taste wines with you. These projects typically develop into long-term partnerships, so we value spending time with our clients. It helps us understand their winemaking goals, so we can craft custom wines that meet their specific criteria.
